In today’s world, we are so connected to our smartphones that it is more tempting than ever to be distracted by that gadget while driving. Sitting here reading this, most people can understand that distracted driving is extremely dangerous, and yet a lot of people also happen to use their phones while driving, putting their own lives and the lives of others at even greater risk. Chevrolet is aiming to help with this problem by launching a new smartphone app called Call Me Out. What does the Chevrolet Call Me Out app do? Essentially, it calls out drivers when they have chosen to use their phones while driving.

How does it work?

This unique app uses technology and loved ones, forces that are among the most influential in people’s lives, to help stop distracted driving behavior. It’s a new kind of audible alert, one that is much more powerful than a simple beep or ringing, using the voices of your loved ones to “call you out” if you pick up your phone while driving.

Can you disable Auto Stop/Start on your Chevy?

Call Me Out uses the accelerometer in the phone as well as the GPS to detect when the phone is actually picked up as it travels at speeds of over five miles per hour. When it detects this, it plays prerecorded and personalized messages from your friends, family, or a significant other to remind you that using your phone while driving is not worth the risk to your safety. As if that weren’t enough, it even offers a gaming aspect to it, using a scoreboard and rankings to motivate you to handle your phone less while driving.

The app was developed when Chevrolet hosted a “hackathon” to challenge computer-savvy people to offer up a personalized solution for reducing distracted driving. The app is currently available for Android phones and will require compatible equipment and data plans. Users must be 18 years old or over.
