The hot and humid, mosquito-filled summer air is about to ride off into the sunset and welcome crisp and fresh fall air as the seasons change. Of course, one of the most interesting aspects of fall is the changing color of the leaves. The bright greens of spring and summer change over to vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges, making for quite a spectacle no matter where you are. Here in Michigan we are particularly lucky, as we have plenty of opportunities to enjoy natural scenery just about anywhere. If you want to drive around and take in all of the beautiful fall colors, we have a few suggestions for some of the best places to see fall foliage in western Michigan.

Millennium Park

Millennium Park in Grand Rapids is open year-round, and in the autumn, it gives visitors a chance to see the magnificent change in colors while walking or biking along the 20 miles of trails across its 1,500 acres. The park runs through Grand Rapids, Walker, Grandville, and Wyoming.

Ionia State Recreation Area

Head over to Ionia and enjoy this majestic land full of open meadows, lush forest, a winding river, and more. You’re sure to experience a color rush as the leaves change color this fall wherever you choose to go among this 4,500-acre area. A recreation passport is required, and you can find further details on obtaining one at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources website.

Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park

Located in Cadillac, this state park may be named for trees that never change color, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have plenty of opportunities to see the gorgeous fall foliage. Walk the trail here on a fresh fall afternoon while the sun shimmers through the branches, adding even more vibrancy to the whole experience.

Newaygo State Park

Newaygo State Park is an ideal location if you want to have a look at the fall foliage and then spend the night at one of the rustic campsites. Of course, you can simply stay for an afternoon of hiking the trails and enjoy a picnic while taking in the scenery as well.
